Award Winning Committee!

York volunteers raise £128,439 for charity and win prestigious national award

A dedicated team of volunteers have raised a truly outstanding sum for Macmillan Cancer Support from their fundraising activities in 2017 and won Macmillan’s prestigious ‘Fundraising Committee of the Year’ award which recognises exceptional achievement through team work.

The Macmillan York Fundraising Committee have raised £128,439 through their fundraising last year. The volunteer team works to their strengths with members taking responsibility for different events from traditional coffee mornings to cash collections, to curry nights, festive lunches and carol services, together with their involvement in Macmillan’s flagship Race Day event at York Race Course.

Each year the Macmillan Volunteer Awards celebrate amazing volunteers around the UK. These awards offer the chance to say a huge thank you for the time, care, expertise and commitment volunteers so generously give.

Katrina Lane, chair of the York Committee, said “I am blessed with a fabulous, dedicated and hardworking Committee and it is through that teamwork, together with Macmillan Cancer Support’s wonderful staff, that we make things happen and achieve such amazing results, which mean we can increase Macmillan’s services in York.

We must also not forget our loyal band of volunteers who turn out in all weathers to hold collection buckets and support in so many other ways and of course the generous and caring public who donate, buy tickets, supply prizes and offer endless enthusiasm. We could not do any of this without them. Thank you all. Together we are making a difference nationally and especially through our combined efforts locally.”

Sarah Child, Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in York said “This award is incredibly well deserved, the York Committee continue to raise the bar for what is achievable and having raised £10,000 more than the previous year they are truly inspirational. This sum is enough to fund 4,587 hours of vital cancer care from a Macmillan nurse enabling local people facing the toughest fight of their life to receive the support they so desperately need.”

The Committee are by no means resting on their laurels and have already held collections and their annual curry night to kick start their 2018 fundraising. Many more plans are afoot including a Firewalk later in the year.
